Kopra kids
In Mapanas, a fifth class municipality in Northern Samar,Philippines. Children as young as seven years old engage in the process of “Kopra” making, the extraction of dried coconut meat to produce coconut oil. The process is rigorous which starts from cooking the coconut shells in open air to dry coconut meat to extraction using makeshift sharp bolos.
They also transport the sacks filled with kopra products with their bare hands and feet in a two hours trek from the mountains to the town center. The sacks weigh from 15 to 30 kilograms. They earn 40 to 60 pesos per sack. Children engage in this kind of job to earn money and help their family meet their everyday needs.
